His Excellency, Most Reverend Frank J. Dewane
Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida

Most Reverend Bishop Frank J. Dewane serves as the spiritual leader of more than 250,000 Catholics in the 10-county Diocese of Venice in Florida. He was appointed in 2007 as the second Bishop of the Diocese.

Beginning his studies for the priesthood at the University of Notre Dame, Bishop Dewane completed prerequisites in philosophy and then attended the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome for theology. While in Rome, he received a Licentiate in Canon law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas.

On July 16, 1988, Bishop Dewane was ordained to the Diocese of Green Bay and appointed as an Assistant Pastor. During this time, he worked for the Diocesan Tribunal as well.

In 1991, he was appointed as a member of the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York City. Transferred to the Vatican in 1995, Bishop Dewane worked at the Pontifical Council “Cor Unum” until 2001 at which time he was appointed Under Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. In both positions, then-Monsignor Dewane, was an official delegate of the Holy See to numerous international conferences and world summits.

On April 25, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI named him Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida and on January 19, 2007, he became only the second Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida.

Bishop Dewane currently sits on a number of United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (U.S.C.C.B.) boards and committees, including The National Advisory Council; the Committee on International Justice and Peace; the Committee for Domestic Justice and Human Development; the Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage; and is on the Board of Directors for Catholic Relief Services. Bishop Dewane also serves on the Board of Directors for the Florida State Conference of Catholic Bishops.

In addition, His Excellency is on the Episcopal Board of Governors for the Pontifical North American College; the Board of Trustees for the Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land; the Board of Trustees for Ave Maria University; the Board of Governors at Ave Maria School of Law and is Chairman of the Board of St. Vincent de Paul Seminary.

Involved in a number of Catholic Fraternal Organizations, he is a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre; Chaplain ad Honorum to the Order of Malta; and Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus.

Attending the University of Wisconsin, Bishop Dewane earned a bachelor’s degree and later a Master’s Degree in International Administration from the American University in Washington, D.C. Moreover, Bishop Dewane received an Honorary Degree from St. Leo University.

Prior to entering the seminary, he worked for the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) in Moscow, Russia, and then for a subsidiary of PepsiCo in New York City.
